The brief was to explore themes around the word “Surface” and
utilise the various production and glitching processes we had learnt.
I used mainly cyanotypes and manual scanner glitching. I then decided to interpret it as my perspective of Melbourne’s “surface”
i.e my thoughts and impressions of a country and city I was in for
the first time. ⁣
Basically, my impressions were almost the complete opposite
of my expectations and so I decided to depict it through highlighting one of Melbourne’s biggest social issues; homelessness. How can
a place named “World’s Most Liveable City” 7 years in a row have
a homelessness problem? Thus the title—Disenchantment.⁣
Every part of the image except for the homeless folk is glitched
to convey that the reputation of Melbourne as seen from the outside
is “distorted” and the homelessness issue is the “reality”. The images are purposefully inverted so the viewer can’t discern what he/she is viewing at first glance—forcing the viewer to “take a closer look”, just like how the the issue of homelessness deserves a “closer look” as it has been unresolved for some time.
